What is photonics?
Photonics studies light and other electromagnetic radiation properties, whose quantum unit is the photon, and its practical application, through its generation, emission, transmission, modulation, signal processing, switching, amplification and sensing. The field of photonics initiated when the laser was built in 1960 and since then, 30 Nobel Laureates have been adwarded connected to photonics.
“…just as the 20th century was the age of electronics, so the 21st century will be the age of photonics” Richard Quimby. Polytechnic Institute Worcester, MA, USA.
